Scoring and points

The calculation of scores and points

Created by Mustafa Ekim / July, 2022

To create a test that yields expected results, it is essential to comprehend how the test score is calculated. Testinvite utilizes a straightforward and flexible scoring methodology that permits the creation of highly personalized scoring scenarios.

When answering a question, the test-taker is awarded a percentage score, which is then multiplied by the question's point value to determine its impact on the overall test score. This is the general rule to keep in mind.

Test score

The test-taker's test score is obtained by dividing (1) the sum of all the points earned by the test-taker by the (2) total points of the test.

Example: Suppose a test consists of 10 questions, each worth 1 point, and the test-taker has answered 7 of them correctly. In that case, the test score will be 70% (7/10).
When a question is marked as ineffective or ignored, it is not considered in the calculation of both the total points of the test and the total points earned by the test-taker.

(1) The points earned by the test taker

The points earned by the test-taker are the sum of all the points earned from each question that has contributed to the total points of the test.

(2) Total points of the test

The system calculates the total points of the test by adding up the points assigned to all the questions included in the test.

The calculation of points earned from each question

After answering a test question, the responder is given a percentage score between 100% and -100%. If the percentage score is positive, it is multiplied by the point value of the test question. Conversely, if the percentage score is negative, it is multiplied by the test question's negative multiplier.

The negative multiplier is used to apply penalty points if desired. By default, all questions have a negative multiplier of 0, meaning that there are no penalty points. However, it is possible to customize the negative multiplier of individual questions to modify their behavior. The penalty point is primarily used to penalize incorrect answers.

Examples

  • If the test-taker's answer is scored as 100% correct and the question is worth 1 point, the test-taker is awarded 1 point (100% x 1) for that question.
    • If the test-taker's answer is scored as 50% correct and the question is worth 1 point, the test-taker is awarded 0.5 point (50% x 1) for that question.
      • If the test-taker's answer is scored as 25% correct and the question is worth 4 point, the test-taker is awarded 1 point (25% x 4) for that question.
        • If the test-taker's answer is scored as 0% correct and the question is worth 5 point, the test-taker is awarded 0 point (0% x 5) for that question.
          • When the test-taker's answer is scored as -100% incorrect and the question carries a negative multiplier of 1, the test-taker will be given -1 point (-100% x 1) for that question.
            • When the test-taker's answer is scored as -50% incorrect and the question carries a negative multiplier of 4, the test-taker will be given -2 point (-50% x 4) for that question.
