Preventing ChatGPT cheating

Measures to prevent test-takers using ChatGPT

Created by Mustafa Ekim / March, 2023

The revolutionary AI technology of ChatGPT is taking the world by storm, transforming various fields. Online assessments are no exception, where students, test-takers, and candidates may use ChatGPT to boost their scores, causing unease for test administrators who put in a lot of time and effort to create tests that accurately measure a person's knowledge, skills, and traits, and the use of ChatGPT for cheating puts all that effort and hard work at risk, especially when the online assessment software being used does not provide adequate measures to prevent cheating.

Testinvite is committed to delivering top-notch assessment software to test administrators, enabling them to create and conduct secure tests with ease. We stay up-to-date with the latest developments and take necessary measures to prevent cheating attempts involving ChatGPT or similar AI language models. Although we have plans to introduce additional features for both preventing and detecting the use of ChatGPT, our current set of security measures is already effective at preventing its use.

Below are the measures we recommend taking if your test questions can be easily answered by ChatGPT:

Lockdown browser

A lock-down browser is designed to create a secure testing environment for online tests. It restricts a test-taker's access to other applications, websites, and functions on their device during the exam, preventing them from engaging in any activities that may compromise the integrity of the exam.

Enabling the Screen Locking feature in your test delivery will prevent test-takers from navigating away from the testing interface, which in turn prevents them from using tools like ChatGPT to find answers to your test questions.

Screen recording

With this feature enabled, the test-taker's screen is recorded, and their image can be transmitted to the test administrator or proctor in real-time for monitoring purposes.

Screen recording during online testing can effectively prevent and detect cheating attempts by test-takers, as their use of ChatGPT or other similar tools can be recorded and monitored.

Time limits on page level

A test can have several time limits set at different levels, including the entire test, every section of the test, and even every page of the test.

Effective time limits are essential for preventing test-takers from using ChatGPT during an exam. By setting time limits on a page level and adjusting the allocated time, test-takers are encouraged to stay focused on the exam without wasting time accessing external resources. This significantly reduces the chances of cheating attempts using ChatGPT.

Preventing selection and copying text

Preventing text selection and copying can make it harder for test-takers to use ChatGPT for finding answers to test questions.
