How to create true/false questions?

A widely used format that presents a statement and requires the test-taker to decide whether it is true or false.
March, 2025

True/False questions are as clear and concise as they sound: decide if a statement is true or false. As a binary format with only two possible answers, these questions are ideal for quickly assessing factual knowledge, identifying misconceptions, and confirming understanding.

What is a true/false question?

True/false question presents the test-taker with a statement and two choices: True or False. If the correct choice is selected, the full point value is awarded. Incorrect answers may receive no points or a penalty depending on the question’s scoring setup.

How to create a true/false question

1. Create a new question via Question Bank > + New Question.

2. Select the multiple choice question type.

3. Write a clear sentence as the question statement that the respondent will evaluate as either true or false.

You may use formatted text and embed rich media such as images, videos or audio clips and tables. This helps contextualize the statement, especially in assessments involving visual or auditory comprehension.

4. Enter the answer choices True and False.

5. Mark the correct one as the answer.

6. Click Save and use the Preview feature to test how the question looks to the candidate.

Optionally, you can set scoring, apply a negative multiplier to penalize incorrect answers, add feedback depending on the answer to reinforce learning or clarify misunderstandings, and link your question to related subjects, for reporting and analysis.

Advantages of true/false questions

👍Simplicity: Easy to write, easy to answer.

👍Clarity: Straightforward and unambiguous.

👍Speed: Quick for test-takers to complete.

👍Objectivity: Minimizes bias and subjectivity.

👍Versatility: Suitable for quizzes, surveys, and exams.

👍Feedback-friendly: Enables instant feedback for learning.

Limitations of true/false questions

⚠️Limited depth: Cannot assess detailed understanding.

⚠️Lack of nuance: Some topics can't be fully captured in binary format.

⚠️Wording bias: Poorly phrased statements may mislead.

⚠️Ambiguity: Can create confusion if not written clearly.

⚠️Creativity constraint: No opportunity for open-ended responses.

Best practices

✅Use unambiguous and precise language.
✅Avoid absolutes like "always" or "never" unless they are definitively correct.
✅Don’t combine two ideas in one statement (avoid double-barreled questions).
✅Provide balanced use of true and false answers across the test.
